I wasn’t thinking. I was acting. I ran straight at the null mage, fists balled. He fired off a round of inky blackness. A chunk of my right arm was deleted from existence. Blood erupted. The pain barely registered. Null-boy’s power flared. Just as he pointed at me again, he doubled over. A twenty pound Maine coon cat had just speared him in his junk. Another cat clawed its way up the man’s body. It stood on his collar and clawed at his eyes. The sight of him screaming and flinging a cat across the room brought me back to myself.
I gathered what power I could and magnetized the iron in the blood in both of his carotid arteries. Huge clots formed. The pressure grew. Both arteries exploded. He let out a scream and turned toward me. He pointed at me and released another death bolt. Fortunately for me, I collapsed. Too much Power spent too quickly took me to my knees. The bolt passed over my head. The null mage went unconscious, his life quickly ebbing. I struggled to stand.
“I told you to take a potion!” Vanessa was clearly not happy with me. “Listen next time. I’ve been doing this longer than you!” She was right.
